Cross Platform Journalism
It’s not switching platforms, it’s transferring old platforms into the new world of journalism.
This was my immediate response to a centerpiece penned by Regina McCombs on the Poynter Web site. In her piece, McCombs discusses her move, nearly a decade ago, from television news to multimedia journalism. She termed her move, along with many others as “switching motherships.” This is something that’s happened with an increasing frequency among print and television reporters. Perhaps what is more common is a print reporter transitioning to work on the Web (the same goes from television, where I can’t speak with as much authority).
But I don’t think journalists are switching platforms to work online. Instead, they’re bringing their current platforms to the online world. McCombs is correct - on the Internet, media outlets from any emphasis area (radio, television, newspaper) can compete more directly with one another. This is one of the best things about the Web. It takes down barriers to entry and barriers to competition, making our craft better.
This is the future of all journalism, not just online journalism.
